In the past few weeks Government Ministers have been making some absurd statements, which no right-thinking member of the public would believe. Whether it be about boycotting American products or living on Rs.7500, or more sinister in the form of disembodying media personnel--Members of the government feel they are entitled to express themselves without any consequence.

The United States Resolution against Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva has caused an unprecedented uproar in the country. Everyone from professionals to the clergy have taken to the streets, hoping their outcry in our little isle will subdue to the world powers.

With the recent spike in the number of protests being held, one has to wonder whether civil servants in this country are been given their due place? Are those that see to the public needs of this country being neglected and shortchanged by those that we elected into office?

In the past few months, intra party conflict amongst the opposition parties has been rampant and now this dividing disease seems to have spread to the ruling party as well. There are promises of investigations and disciplinary actions to quell the emerging division, however it is a given that when the cracks begin to show publicly, that dissection or downfall is not far behind.

However in Sri Lanka our youth are being punished, held back and frustrated due to the inefficiencies of management in the education system. From results debacles to violence at universities, young people hoping to pursue education in their home country are clouded with uncertainty.

The recent incident in Tangalle that resulted in the death of a British National and the subsequent attack on a Sri Lankan by a British National leaves us to question whether foreign nationals in Sri Lanka are being adequately protected and at the same time controlled by local law enforcement.

Recent incidents concerning a charity that was accused of selling the children of unwed mothers has raised the question of regulating children’s homes. Groups that run these homes, regardless of their religious affiliation, carry out their operations for the sake of those lost and abandoned by society.
However the name of charity leaves for many areas to be exploited and abused. Therefore the role of the state in regulation of these activities is imperative.

During the recent inclement weather, the Meteorological Department has been dreary in its approach and thoroughly unprepared. Government officials have only offered weak replies and apologies. However someone needs to be held responsible for the loss of life and damage to property, but moreover to ensure that when natural disasters strike we are informed and ready to deal with them.

The Budget 2012 has laid out the governments economic plans for the coming year. However instead of resolving issues for the people it has caused greater uncertainty. The uproar in the house during the reading of the budget, the false promise of a pay hike and the possible implications for the IMF loan have all caused us to wonder if the government has made arbitrary decisions in its steamrolling towards economic development.
